History

The One Nation Hip Hop Summit is benefit event
for the youth and programs at the
Pico Youth & Family Center in West Los Angeles.
The Pico Youth & Family Center is a non-profit [501(c)3 organization in Santa Monica committed to youth development and preventing youth violence. The PYFC was formed as a response to a sharp increase in youthviolence in 1998. In collaboration with the City of Santa Monica and Saint John's Health Center, with extensive youth input, the PYFC developed engaging services for youth and young adults.
Aside from providing services, the PYFC engages in youth leadership development. The PYFC is the only youth serving agency in the region whose services target youth ages 16-24 who are most at risk, such as youth who are out of school, are on probation and/or failing academically. Since opening in 2002, we have served hundreds of youth through case management, music and film production training, counseling, tutoring, vocation training, and computer training.

The Pico Youth & Family Center represents a new model for addressing the issues of today's youth. Through the PYFC's Hip Hop programming we have trained youth in the recording arts thus providing hundreds of youth an alternative to gangs and crime.
Last June youth participants completed PYFC All-Stars Vol.3 a CD compilation featuring twenty original poems and songs. This project was inspired by the need to combat the tensions between Black and Brown youth.
The One Nation Hip Hop Summit will provide an opportunity to showcase the talent of youth participants who will be given an opportunity to spread a positive message that will counter the violence, sexism and self-destruction espoused by many in the music industry.
